The Management School of WUT (MSWUT) undertakes the mission of “integrating the management wisdom, developing cross disciplines, fostering outstanding talents and promoting social sustainability”. The School of Management at WUT is formed by the merger of the School of Business Administration at Wuhan University of Industry, the School of Economics and Management at Wuhan University of Transportation Technology, and the School of Management at Wuhan Automotive Polytechnic University. The historical evolution of the School of Management can be divided into three stages.
First stage (initial stage): 1964-2000
The School of Management was founded in 1964 by Wuhan University of Industry, which originated from Hubei Institute of Technology. It started admitting undergraduate students majoring in Industry Economics in 1965. In 1977, it was among the first institutions in China to resume the admission of undergraduate students majoring in Management Engineering. In 1983, it was granted the authority to confer master’s degrees in Management Engineering. In 1987, Management Engineering was evaluated as a key discipline. In 1993, Management Science and Engineering was awarded doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline. In 1997,MBA was approved as a master’s degree authorization point. In 2000, the School of Management at WUT is formed by the merger of the three schools.
During this period, the School of Management became the first School to launch the majors in Industrial Economics, publish the textbook named Principles of Management, appoint a group of professors in the field of management, appoint a group of doctoral supervisors from the State Council, establish the Department of Industrial Management Engineering after the resumption of the college entrance examination. The five achievements laid the foundation for her transformation.
Second stage (development period): 2001-2018
During this period, the School of Management saw continuous progress in its disciplinary development. In 2000, the School set up a postdoctoral center for Management Science and Engineering; in 2002, it began enrolling MBA students; in 2003, doctoral degrees were awarded for the major of Techno-Economics and Management; in 2005, doctoral degrees were awarded for the major of Enterprise Management; in 2004, the School collaborated with five internationally renowned universities including Yamaguchi University in Japan and Tilburg University in the Netherlands, to initiate and host the International Conference on Innovation and Management (ICIM).
In 2015, in line with the decisions of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on the “Double First-Class” Project, the School of Management implemented new development ideas and morality education as its fundamental task, while highlighting its “Double First-Class” pursuit, and seeking to cultivate first-class talents and keep up with world-class standards. In 2018, the School was authorized to grant doctorate degrees in the first-class discipline of business administration.
Third stage (quality improvement stage): 2019-present
Entering a new era of development in 2019, the School of Management seized upon the national policy of “ Double Ten Thousand Plan” to embark on a trajectory of leap-forward development in establishing first-class programs and First-class courses. In 2019, the School’s Business Administration program was approved as a national first-class program. In 2020, the Accounting program received the same recognition. In 2021, the programs of Human Resources, as well as Information System and Information Management, also were approved as a national first-class program. Subsequently, the programs of Marketing, and Financial Management, were approved as provincial first-class program. Up to now, the faculty operates 2 Postdoctoral Research Stations in Management Science and Engineering and Business Administration; 2 First-Level Doctoral Disciplines in Management Science and Engineering and Business Administration;2 First-Level Academic Master’s Disciplines in Management Science and Engineering and Business Administration; 2 Full-Time Professional Master’s Degree Programs including Master of Professional Accounting (MPAcc) and Master of Valuation (MV); and 3 Non-Full-Time Professional Master’s Degree Programs including Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Engineering Management (MEM), and Master of Professional Accounting (MPAcc). The faculty houses 4 provincial and ministerial-level research institutions: the Hubei Provincial Product Innovation Management Research Center, the Ministry of Transport Interdisciplinary Accounting Talent Training Base, the Wuhan·China Urban Science Policy and Science Management Research Center, and the Wuhan Science and Technology Strategy Institute. In 2024, the school was officially awarded the BGA Gold Accreditation at the 2024 AMBA&BGA Global Conference held in Budapest, Hungary.
In addition to disciplinary development, the School of Management also placed significant emphasis on the professional development of faculty. The School recruited 2 Chinese Academy of Engineering academicians and 1 Russian National Academy of Engineering foreign member, 1 scholar who has won the title of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 3 awardees of the Hubei High-Level Talent Program. The School has newly added 1 State Council Special Allowance Recipient; 3 individuals selected for the Hubei Provincial High-Level Talent Program; 2 university Strategic Scientists, 1 Chief Professor of the Discipline, and 1 First-Class Major Development Responsible Professor; along with 2 Young Elite Talent Cultivation Program awardees. 1 Professor was awarded the National First Prize in the Third National College Teachers’ Teaching Innovation Competition.
The School of Management has also achieved some accomplishments in curriculum development. For example, securing 5 national first-class courses and 13 provincial first-class courses.
In the field of academic research, the faculty has secured approval for over 2,900 research projects, including 180+ national-level projects(1 Key Special Project under the National Key R&D Program);88 National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects(1 Key Program, 2 Major Research Plan Incubation Projects);53 National Social Science Foundation of China (NSSFC) projects(3 Major Programs, 3 Key Programs). In addition,87 achievements were awarded Provincial and Ministerial-Level Science and Technology Progress Awards or Outstanding Achievement Awards in Humanities and Social Sciences, while 62 achievements received Municipal-Level Science and Technology Progress Awards or Outstanding Achievement Awards in Humanities and Social Sciences. The total contracted research funding reached RMB 370 million. In total,98 academic monographs were published, and over 2,900 high-level academic papers were disseminated.
In the field of academic collaborations, the faculty has established cooperations with over 50 universities and research institutions across dozens of countries and regions.The school actively promotes international talent cultivation, offering full English-taught MBA and doctoral programs for international students, which have trained over 1,000 graduates from the United States, France, Russia, Japan, Southeast Asia, and other regions. As the co-founder, the ICIM has successfully held 21 sessions, with its proceedings consistently indexed by CPCI (formerly ISTP) and fully archived in the CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) database, demonstrating significant academic value. In March 2022, the school launched the international journal Management System Engineering (MSE), published by Springer in open-access format. The journal’s editorial board comprises globally recognized scholars in management science and systems engineering.
In the field of student cultivation, the faculty has demonstrated 1 student awarded the China Youth May Fourth Medal, 1 student honored as a National Outstanding Communist Youth League Member, 6 students recognized as China Self-Made College Student Role Models, 2 students receiving the China Outstanding Youth Volunteer Individual Award, 3 Gold Medals in the China Youth Volunteer Service Project Competition, and the designation as a National Exemplary Volunteer Organization under the “Four 100s” Campaign in the national Learn-from-Lei Feng Volunteer Service initiative. Over the past five years, 173 students have won awards in national and provincial-level competitions such as the Challenge Cup and Youth Entrepreneurship Competition. The School has secured the Golden Autumn Cup, the highest honor of the University Cultural and Arts Festival, 20 times, and achieved 19 consecutive overall championships in the University Sports Games, with 1 student earning a gold medal in the long jump at the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games. It has also been granted 2 National Party Building Model Branches and 1 Hubei Provincial Graduate Student Party Building Model Branch. The graduate employment rate has remained consistently above 94%, with an annual average of over 200 undergraduates pursuing advanced studies domestically or abroad.

The mission of MSWUT evolves over time as a result of continuous adaptation and development. Earlier, the aim of MSWUT was to integrate management wisdom, contribute management knowledge and talents, and serve social development. However, as society increasingly prioritizes sustainable, green, and digital development, the demands of employers and students have shifted accordingly. As a result, MSWUT has revised its mission to focus more on “promoting interdisciplinarity collaboration, contributing outstanding talents, and advancing sustainable development.”
First, the connotation of “synthesize cutting-edge management knowledge” requires teachers and students of the School of Management to continuously absorb the latest technological developments, especially the achievements and wisdom of big data and AI, in scientific research, teaching, and learning. By integrating the actual situation of the organizational environment, particularly with Chinese characteristics, they aim to cultivate high-quality talents possessing various abilities such as systematic thinking, innovative thinking, people-oriented management, and risk management, in order to achieve sustainable development and competitive advantages for organizations.
Second, the profound meaning of “promoting interdisciplinarity” is to promote the integration of green development, digitalization and disciplines (MBA, Management Science and Engineering, Business Administration, Accounting, Human Resources, Marketing), in order to contribute to the sustainable development of mankind and technological progress.
Third, the profound meaning of “cultivate outstanding talents” is that the school fosters students with excellent management talent, entrepreneurial ability and entrepreneurial spirit to provide consulting services for the society and regional economic development.
On the other hand, the school develops their capabilities of digital technology and green management to improve the social sustainability, and undertake the responsibility of promoting human rights development, no poverty, zero hunger, and quality education.
